Vegan & EcoFriendly Laundry

I'm often asked what products I use to wash my clothes, and most people are surprised by the answer. I use an egg!

No, obviously not an actual egg, but a wonderful innovation called an EcoEgg Laundry Egg.

Not my actual hand, I borrowed all the pics from the EcoEgg website!

These were introduced to me by a friend who swears by them, and I have to say they are now my favourite way to wash clothes.

Vegan, approved by Allergy UK, allergy and skin friendly, these miraculous little eggs are also eco friendly and work out very cost effective too. They use essential oils rather than nasty synthetic scents and I am in love with their fragrances!

I have the pink one which is the Spring Blossom scent, and I also treated myself to the limited edition Lavender one last year, because why the heck not.

The "eggs" contain pellets made from two different minerals (one is tourmaline - so you're washing with crystals!) and they can be used alone or alongside any other laundry products you want.

The eggs are refillable, so there's very little waste to worry about.

Just one thing - don't open up your EcoEgg to peek at the pellets before you're ready to change them because they will go everywhere and you'll have a terrible time trying to get them back in again. Don't ask me how I know that, just remember that the refills come in a dissolving bag for a reason...

EcoEgg also do lovely concentrated fabric softeners to match the different egg fragrances. One bottle can last you up to a year which is pretty cool, but I find they don't fragrance quite pungent enough for my personal taste, so I often mix and match with a different vegan-friendly softener.

EcoEgg also do scented, refillable "dryer eggs" too for the tumble drier, but I don't currently have one of those. They reduce drying time by about one third, and leave a gorgeous scent without using one of those nasty dryer sheets. You can use them with or without the scented stick in the middle. Again the fragrance sticks are refillable to minimise on waste.

EgoEgg recently released a statement confirming that all their laundry products are vegan friendly, with the exception of the woollen dryer balls.

I'm a huge fan of their products, so here's the link to their website (use code INSTAP&P for free delivery):

You can buy direct  or find them in a number of stores in the UK including Lakeland.

Despite what you might think, I'm not getting paid to advertise these (sadly), I just really, really, really like their products and I wanted to share. When I first went vegan, I found that suitable eco friendly laundry liquids and powders were generally very costly, and finding the EcoEgg range was something of a lifesaver.

I usually make my pellets last well beyond the official number of washes indicated on the packaging, and mine only get refilled when the pellets get so small they start to fall out the gaps! They can also withstand boil washing, although this may not be recommended on the packaging, but I've seen these Eggs used and abused by a busy Mum, and she reliably told me they can definitely cope with her machine's 90 degree wash!

There are lots of other brilliant vegan laundry solutions, and Astonish is a brand to look out for because all of their products carry the Vegan Trademark, but I'm not sure how eco friendly their products are. Their stain removers and cleaners are fantastic, and usually available from budget stores like Poundland or Savers so that's a good one to remember when money is tight.

Other easy to get options include Method and Ecover, both available from most supermarkets. Ecover is the more affordable of the two brands, although it still costs more than regular laundry products, but it's a useful failsafe that you can always get hold of at Tesco at short notice.

Do remember that your local health food store probably stocks some good eco friendly options for your vegan laundry requirements too, so remember to check those out. Many now offer refillable options, so you can take your empty bottles back to save on waste and and save yourself some money too.

Happy Laundry Days!
