Best Vegan Gravy from scratch

Vegan gravy that tastes like proper gravy!

With Christmas just around the corner, and the days drawing in, I thought this was a good time to share my gravy recipes with you. Especially as shopping is a bit more difficult at the moment, this is a very simple but stunningly delicious gravy recipe that you can whip up with a few cupboard essentials. No more panicking when you run out of Bisto!

This recipe does use wheat flour, so if you need a gluten or wheat free option, try my Onion Gravy recipe.

Although not quite instant, this is very fast to make, so I recommend not preparing this until near the end of your cooking time.

I'm something of a gravy lover, and although I'm from the South of England I do make quite a lot of it! I am quite fussy though, it needs to have a good flavour with real depth and I like it THICK! Gravy makes anything comfort food for me, and I've most recently been pouring this over some homemade root vegetable pasties.

Although it might seem intimidating to make gravy from scratch if you've never done it before, this is actually very quick and easy to whip up on the hob and you'll wonder why you haven't been doing this all along!

The addition of the dark soy sauce makes this an authentic brown gravy colour, and also adds real depth of flavour which can sometimes be lacking from vegetable gravies and sauces.

Ingredients

1oz Vegan Margarine suitable for cooking

1-2 tbsp Strong Bread Flour (use more or less depending on how thick you want your sauce to be)

1 pt Boiling Water

2 Stock Cubes

2-3 tbsp Dark Soy Sauce

1/2 tsp Garlic Powder

1/2 tsp Onion Powder

Method

Melt the magarine in a small stainless steel saucepan over a medium high heat

Add the flour (it will sizzle a bit) and mix together to form a soft lump.

Take the pan off the heat for a moment while you dissolve the stock cubes in the boiling water, and turn the hob to a medium setting.

Return the pan to the hob and gradually add the stock, stirring constantly to ensure it all dissolves nicely.

Once all the stick has been added to the pan,  stir in your onion & garlic powders and add the dark soy sauce to add depth to the flavour.

Simmer for 1-2 minutes then serve immediately.

TIP: If you end up with any stubborn lumps, you can successfully use a whisk or worst case a hand blender to get rid of them.
